Genetically Modified Seeds (GMO) - Going against the nature - Harmful Effects - Strategy of MONSANTO
Genetically Modified Seeds (GMO) :
The nature gives enormous amount of things to humans. It allows us to utilize its good things to a maximum extent. But humans are not satisfied with the original things, rather they try to put their own poisonous hands in order to change or modify the things that exists in the nature. One important thing in this world, if any human tries to change the nature, that means changing the natural thing into a artificial thing, it will definitely end up in disaster. Humans in the past few years try to change up the original things. One such important thing is modifying the nature of the plants, herbs and fruit giving plants by changing the nature of its seeds. That we call it as "Genetically Modified Seeds (GMO).
Why we need GMO's :
The GMO's has its own market globally, because of its merits. Some of them are,
- GMO seeds are less prone to pest or insect attacks. So the use of pesticides and insecticides gets to reduce drastically.
- GMO seeds needs less amount of water and does not require manures and growth boosters like Urea etc.,
- GMO seeds gives large amount of yield to the farmers when compared to the natural seeds.
- Any crop planted by GMO seeds are ready to be harvested within a small amount of time. But crop of natural seeds needs a lot of time to harvest.
These are some of the reasons told by the experts who continuously promoting GMO's in the global market. Whether it is actually true?
First of all, GMOs are something that is invented by humans. Any thing that is invented by anyone in this world comes under patented list. Likewise any GMO seeds invented by humans are just patented by them. So they are the ones who fixes the price of their products in the global market. So it normally comes under the Corporate sectors. Any common man or farmer who needs to buy the GMO seeds always needs to depend on the corporate sectors.
MONSANTO - the global market for GMO seeds :
MONSANTO is now the only company who gets patent for all the available GMOs in the world. This company has its starting as a chemical company. Later, they start to research in the GMOs and they starts to sell their GMO seeds globally in the year 2000.
MONSANTO has supplied a pesticide named Glyphosate (Round Up) in the market. They projected the pesticide as the growth booster for the plants by giving the essential nutrients required by the plants. Later, the farmers using these Glyphosate started to face many problems.
Some of them are,
- Glyphosate causes diseases in crops and many biological disorders in crops.
- The effect of Glyphosate in killing pests gets reduced
- Glyphosate causes birth defects, tumors and many diseases in the animals that takes the plants grown with the help of Glyphosate.
- Glyphosate is linked to cancer and many kidney related issues in humans.
Following the more controversies and issues about GMO seeds, Biologist Arpad Pusztai, a famous nutrition based researcher in America starts to research the GMO seeds. In the research, he divide some of the rats into three groups. For the first group, he gives GMO crops as food, for the second group he gives organic foods and for the third group he gives Organic crops grown with the help of pesticides.
As a result of the experiment, the rats that eats the GMO crops started to suffer from various diseases like tumors and kidney malfunctioning. The rats that eats the organic crops has grown in a healthy way without any problem.
The major issue around the usage of GMOs is that it causes infertility among the humans who consume the foods from GMO seeds. They are more prone to infertility and the capacity to give birth is getting reduced.
One of the famous incident in India, that creates a disturbance around the usage of GMO is Bt Cotton. Bt Cotton is a genetically modified crop of cotton that is widely used by Indian farmers. MONSANTO sells the Bt Cotton to Indian farmers by saying that it is less prone to pest named Pink Bollworm and gives more yield with less amount of water.
But after a years of cultivating the Bt cotton, farmers started to face many problems. First of all the pest that attacks the cotton becomes more resistant and starts to attack the Bt cotton also. Secondly, the Bt cotton's yield starts to decrease and it consumes more water than expected. Farmers started to suffer without income from this crop and many of them starts to suicide.
Bovine Growth Harmone :
One of the major setback for farmers is the use of Bovine Growth Harmone (BGH), adrug used to increase the milk productivity in the animals. Many farmers started to inject the BGH into the milk giving animals like cows and goats. So that, the animals starts to give more milk. The animals also starts to suffer by these drugs. This is not only a issue for milk giving animals, it also affects the diary products and humans who consume the milk from BGH injected animals.
GMO has its effects on the environment also. It kills the natural pollination process by killing the small insects like bees, butterflies etc., It also kills the nutrients in the soil and damages the microorganisms and earthworms in the soil. The soil in which the GMO crops were grown, turn into a land that is not suitable for best cultivation.
There is a hidden agenda for the authorized society to cut down the population of the world. So they are using the GMO based foods as their weapon.
Is Green Revolution in India sets a way for GMO :
Green Revolution in India has came with one main thing. That is, to increase the food security in India. As the population of India grows rapidly, the food production also need to be increases in order to give food for the rapidly growing population. So with the existing natural seeds and water condition, the government cannot able to produce foods for the entire population. So they opt for the GMO seeds to meet the food production of India. But behind this, there is a big strategy of marketting the GMO seeds in India.
We have discussed so far about the harmful effects of GMO seeds and its related products. There is one way to escape from this is to going back to self sufficient living. The economic condition of India is Liberalisation, Globalisation and Privatisation. This kind of economic environment allows to market such harmful things like GMOs into India.
So as a people we need to change our mentality of attracting towards the foreign products and need to be self sufficient with our own things.
