The Struggle of Migrant Workers - Corona Virus and Lockdown left many people as Stranded across the Streets

The voice of many stranded people all over the world does'nt hear to the authorized society. There is no one to hear the plea and to wipe out the tears of many stranded people.

The corona pandemic all over the world has many effects over the culture, tradition and day to day life of many citizens. It also affects the workers and labourers who moved away from their native place to other cities of the world in search of their work.

The lockdown to control the spread of corona virus has started in India during March 25. Till now it has crosses three stages.
  • The first stage of lockdown starts  from March 25 and ended in April 14.
  • The second stage of lockdown starts  from April 15 and ended in May 3.
  • The third stage of lockdown starts  from May 4 and ended in May 17.
  • The fourth stage of lockdown is in process from May 18.
As soon as the government implements the first stage of lockdown, it stops all the transport services and banned all the transportation of the common man to avoid the spreading of Corona virus. It may seem like a good strategy by the government. But behind this idea, there is a huge society of migrant workers who started to suffer from many things.

The migrant workers in India are not from well settled families. They move from their native places just to earn a little amount of money to fulfill their daily needs. Most of the migrant workers in India are daily wages. They try to move back to their native places during this lockdown for some reasons. They are,

As already discussed, most of the migrant workers are daily wages. So they need to go the job daily in order to run their daily life. This lockdown closes all the small scale industries and firms which they are working. So they tend to lose their daily jobs. As a result they are left alone with no income to run their life.

During this lockdown, the price of needy groceries rise to a maximum extent. Without proper income they are not able to buy their needs.

The companies or industries recruiting them for the job has a broker. The broker of these companies or industries gathers the workers of poor family background from all over the places. All the household rents and other expenses regarding the job must be taken care by these brokers. As the lockdown extends for further more days, these brokers are not able to take care off their workers.

The migrant workers has left with only one option. It is to move back to their native place. The lockdown all over the India shuts down all the public transportation facilities. So they try to move back just by walking with hungry stomachs and teared eyes. They start to move back with their families including aged people and small infant children. They faced a lot of difficulties while travelling.

First, they does not have proper food and water. So most of the workers move back with hungry stomachs. They are wandering around the streets of India in search of food and water. So the government tries to keep them safe in the shelter houses. There they have been provided with two meals a day. In order to get that food, they must form a large queues. They are struggling there also. Whatever the government gives is not sufficient for them.

A long March

These workers with their families have to cover a distance of more kilometres in order to reach their places.

There is a carpenter named Sathyavan who is from Baduan district of Uttar Pradesh. In search of work he moved from Baduan to Noida of Uttar Pradesh with his wife (Usha) and two children aged 3 and 1. He lost his job in Noida due to lockdown. So he and his wife with their two children reached Baduan by walking a distance of nearly 150 Kilometres.

Many migrant workers while walking, they gets tired and takes rest for a while in the Bus stops, Railway stations, etc., 16 migrant workers from Aurangabad tries to move back to Madhya Pradesh. They slept in a railway lane. They were crushed by the goods train. 14 of them were killed and 2 were seriously injured. This tragedy shakes all over India and its Government. This is how all the workers were taking risks in order to reach their native places.

This COVID - 19 due to corona virus affects the people economically and mentally. What is the solution for this? Let us discuss the pros and cons of employing the migrant workers in the further posts.
